A Performance Mentorship for Practitioners Who Carry Responsibility

High-performance sport is complex, uncertain, and often uncomfortable.
Decisions matter. Context matters. People matter.

Skin in the Game is a mentorship for practitioners operating where outcomes carry consequence — where decisions directly influence performance, availability, trust, and careers. It is for those who have moved beyond chasing more information and instead want to develop judgement, clarity, and decision-making capability inside complex systems.

The name is inspired by the work of Nassim Nicholas Taleb, whose concept of skin in the game centres on accountability and shared risk. In elite sport, this is unavoidable: those making decisions live with their outcomes.

This mentorship exists for that reality.

Why This Mentorship Exists

High-performance sport is not linear.
It is complex, adaptive, and constantly changing.

Practitioners make decisions with incomplete information, compressed timelines, competing priorities, and multiple stakeholders — often under pressure. In these environments, technical knowledge is rarely the limiting factor. What differentiates effective practitioners is their ability to interpret complexity, recognise patterns, and make sound decisions under uncertainty.

Skin in the Game is led by Peter Hughes, a dual-qualified Physiotherapist and Strength & Conditioning Coach with over a decade of experience across elite and professional sport. His roles span physical preparation, athletic development, performance, and medical–performance leadership, embedded within environments where availability, trust, and outcomes are non-negotiable.

Development in these settings is shaped through designing, testing, and refining decision-making processes inside complex systems — not through the passive accumulation of frameworks.
Ideas are tested against reality.
Assumptions are challenged by outcomes.
Decision pathways are refined under pressure.

Performance Systems & Decision-Making

A central focus of this work is the ongoing evolution of performance systems that allow athletes to perform at the highest level, while fully acknowledging complexity and uncertainty.

Movement analysis, performance diagnostics, strength and power development, and performance are used as integrated tools to understand how athletes solve movement and performance problems under constraint — across speed, fatigue, tactical demand, and competitive pressure.

Rather than chasing ideal models, the emphasis is on how real athletes coordinate themselves — and how systems either support or constrain that process.

This establishes a clear performance logic:

Movement analysis to understand how problems are being solved
Performance diagnostics to clarify what actually matters
Strength and power development to build robust, transferable capacity
Performance to test whether that capacity holds when pressure is applied
The goal is not to reduce complexity, but to operate within it deliberately.

What consistently determines outcomes is not tools or methods, but decision-making — knowing what to prioritise, when to intervene, when to progress, and when restraint is the better option.

What Skin in the Game Delivers

Skin in the Game is not a rigid model or a set of answers.
It is a guided process that shows practitioners how to build, apply, and refine decision frameworks using real-world experience from elite sport.

Engagement is available through:

1-to-1 mentorship and case-based sessions
A structured 12-week Skin in the Game mentorship
Or a blended approach

1-to-1 Mentorship

Some practitioners engage through individual sessions, using real challenges from their own environment as the working material. These often focus on complex performance decisions, movement or capacity issues, competing stakeholder demands, or loss of clarity around role or direction.

Sessions are direct, analytical, and grounded in applied experience — focused on how decisions are made, not just what decisions are taken.

The Skin in the Game Mentorship (12 Weeks)

For deeper, cumulative development, Skin in the Game is delivered as a 12-week structured mentorship, covering purpose, anchoring, thinking, decision-making, reverse engineering, game models, buy-in, environmental change, preparedness, blind spots, and continual improvement.

The Invitation

Skin in the Game is for practitioners who want to operate with clarity inside complexity, using structured thinking, applied experience, and accountable decision-making as their foundation.

If you are looking for shortcuts or certainty, this is not for you.
If you want to think better, decide better, and act with conviction when the stakes are real, this mentorship may be the next step.
